The biggest musical event in Kilkenny is kicking off this weekend and it’s shaping up to be a tasty mix of war, love and of course singing and dancing. The upcoming 38th production from Kilkenny Musical Society promises to be something very special indeed. The Hired Man is a brave choice from the well established group and should prove to be an exciting, original production.
Based on the novel by Melvyn Bragg, this family saga takes place in late 19th century and early 20th century England moving towards the backdrop of World War I. Bragg’s 1969 novel was adapted into a musical in 1984 by the man himself and Howard Goodall. Kilkenny Musical Society are bringing it to Kilkenny for the first time and they’ve lined up a sterling cast including Kevin Reade, Rebecca Murphy, Matthew Berry, Fergal Millar, Ciarán Dunphy, Kevina Cody, Declan Taylor and John Treacy. The show is directed by David Heffernan who is responsible for most of their hit shows the past couple of years. Musical direction is being handled by Lar Duffy.
It runs Sunday 3rd to Saturday 9th of April at 8pm nightly. Tickets are €20 but you’ll get them at the discounted rate of €16 if you go on the Sunday or Monday night. Bookings can be made in the Watergate Box Office at 056 – 7761674. Rehearsal photos by Pat Moore.
