Trainspotting Arrives In The Watergate
The Devious Theatre Company are returning to the Watergate Theatre this June with another premiere for the Kilkenny stage.
Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting, adapted by Harry Gibson, will arrive in Kilkenny from June 24th to the 28th. It’s the first time this seminal work has been performed here and as one of the most iconic and controversial pieces of literature of the past 20 years, it’s certainly bound to attract a lot of attention.
Welsh’s novel exploded onto the scene in 1993, stunning audiences with its bleak and darkly humorous depiction of the decaying friendships of a bunch of no hopers, heroin addicts and petty criminals attempting to escape the boredom of their lives. Harry Gibson’s theatrical adaptation debuted in 1994 to great acclaim before Danny Boyle’s 1996 film version made Trainspotting a cultural landmark.
The play is seen through the eyes of the self loathing anti hero Mark Renton (Ross Costigan) as he tries to overcome the addictions that hinder his escape from a doomed life. Depicted mostly in monologues, the stories at the heart of the play are unflinchingly shocking, darkly humorous and full of Welsh’s raw observations of life.
Kilkenny’s Devious Theatre Company recently celebrated 2 years of bringing new and unseen works to Kilkenny’s theatre going public. Previously they performed the hugely successful Heart Shaped Vinyl for three runs in Cleere’s Theatre and also staged the Irish premiere of Trey Parker’s Cannibal! The Musical in the Watergate Theatre last August.
Directed by Niamh Moroney and John Morton, Trainspotting features the local acting talents of Stephen Colfer, Ross Costigan, Simone Kelly, Mairead Kiernan, Ken McGuire, John Morton, Michael Murphy, Maria Murray, Suzanne O’Brien, Niall Sheehy and Paul Young.
Tickets are currently available in The Watergate Theatre at 056 – 7761674. The show is booking strongly already so it’s advisable to get tickets while you can. Tickets are 12EURO and the show will begin at 8pm nightly.
