The theatre scene in Dublin is seriously brightening up this week with the launch of the ABSOLUT Gay Theatre Festival which runs in the capital from May 3rd – 16th this year.
There’s a wide variety of shows and acts taking place in Temple Bar, which is the designated zone for all the events that will be taking place over the next 2 weeks. Venues such as The Button Factory, Boys School Studio, The Front Lounge, The George, Smock Alley Studio and The New Theatre will all be showcasing the wide ranging programme for this years festival. And the line up is definitely wide ranging with a large number of performers and groups coming from all over the world to take part.
The organisers are keeping the ticket prices deliberately low so as to encourage as many people to attend as possible., a very wise move in this day and age. The event is one of Ireland’s premier showcases for gay writing and music and shines a spotlight on a plethora of performers, writers and events who may not have had their work shown before. It’s one of the most exciting and unique events on Ireland’s theatre calendar. Speaking about this year’s line up, John H. Pickering, the festival’s director said:“The ABSOLUT Gay Theatre Festival Dublin is a brilliant opportunity to see some fantastic international theatre and an insight into gay culture for those who maybe wouldn’t get that chance elsewhere”.
So there you have it. If you’re looking for something a little different then one of the most innovative events on the Irish theatre calendar might be just the ticket for you. And speaking of tickets and indeed the programme at large, you can pay a visit to the Festival Box Office at Filmbase, Curved Street, Temple Bar or outside of that all info can be found over on their website at: www.absolutgaytheatre.ie
